Have you ever felt like watchmakers are a bit discriminatory towards lefties? Well, IWC Schaffhausen is changing it up. The luxury watchmaker has come up with a new version of its coveted Big Pilot’s Watch to be worn on the right wrist.
The name of the watch is a big giveaway and does exactly what it says, it follows the same design of a pilot’s cockpit with easy-to-read designs the Big Pilot line is known for.
Inspired by the Big Pilot’s Watch Calibre 52 TSC from the 1940s, it has a case diameter of 46.2 millimetres. Designed for left-handed folks or those who like to wear their watch on their right hand, this watch has just one change, the positioning of the iconic, conical-shaped crown, is located on the left-hand side of the case.
The watch comes in a classic steel and black colour scheme. It has a slate-coloured dial and has a black calfskin leather strap. The dial features a power-reserve display situated at “9 o’clock”, a small seconds hand at “3 o’clock”, and a date display at “6 o’clock”. It has a stainless-steel case with a soft-iron inner case, which protects the movement against the effects of magnetic fields.
As with most pilot watches, the watch guarantees optimum legibility, at night or in poor visibility conditions as well. The also watch comes with a seven-day power reserve in the twin barrels.
In an official release from IWC, the watchmaker said that almost 40 percent of pilots are thought to be left-handed, and therefore wear their watches on the right.
IWC Schaffhausen CEO, Christoph Grainger-Herr said: “I’m delighted that we’ve revisited one of the most recognisable icons in the IWC portfolio for this special edition. We are always striving to push the boundaries of engineering and design, and this new watch really exemplifies this drive. It has all the signature elements you’d expect, but with a crucial difference.”
There will be just 250 pieces of this watch available.
