- It was Joshua’s first defeat in his career after winning 20 straight victories
It was definitely a night for the underdog in New York as Andy Ruiz Jr. beat crowd favourite Anthony Joshua in a seventh round TKO to take home the IBF, WBA and WBO titles.
Ruiz’s win is arguably one of the biggest upsets the world of boxing has seen this year.
“I just feel so good, man,” said Ruiz, who won Joshua’s WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles. “This is what I have been dreaming about. This is what I have been working hard for. I can’t believe I just made my dreams come true.”
Originally, Ruiz wasn’t even supposed to fight the match. He was called in just four weeks before the fight afterr Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller failed a series of drug tests.
“That was my first time getting dropped on the floor,” Ruiz said. “But you know what, it just made me stronger and made me want it even more. I just had to knock him down back.
“I didn’t want to throw everything that I got. I wanted to hunt him down even more, work the body, work the head and just listen to the game plan. We just pulled it off, man.”
