Excelsior!

Captain Marvel is now in cinemas worldwide and fans have been applauding the movie’s touching Stan Lee tribute.

Co-director Anna Boden had teased that the tribute to the Marvel legend was “really emotional”, adding: “It was something that came from Marvel and when they showed it to us, there was not a dry eye in the house.”

In case you want to witness the tribute for yourself without spoilers, don’t read past the trailer.

So instead of Captain Marvel opening with the usual Marvel Studios logo that stars the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and co, every image in the logo has been replaced by one of Stan Lee in his numerous cameos.

The logo then ends with “thank you Stan” before the movie gets underway. It’s a beautiful tribute to Lee and fans everywhere have found it emotional.

Later on in Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers walks past Lee on a train as he’s practising his lines from Mallrats. Talking to Mashable, Boden revealed that the scene was changed a little following Lee’s death.

“Instead of just the pure laugh we had, we had a little bit of a smile from Captain Marvel in response to it, and she kind of breaks character for a moment,” she said. “I think it reflects a little bit of what the audience is feeling, and we allowed that to happen.”

Lee’s appearance in Captain Marvel isn’t his final MCU cameo as Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirmed there’s a cameo in an “upcoming” movie as well, probably Avengers: Endgame.
