Girl next door Selena Gomez is no longer the most followed person on Instagram. With 146 million Instagram followers, Ariana Grande is officially the most followed woman on the social media platform.
While both have 146 million followers, the “7 Rings” singer has reigned supreme with 146,485,344 followers to Gomez’s 146,350,372 followers at the time of going to press.
Gomez was Instagram’s most followed user until the end of October when football star Cristiano Ronaldo took her top spot. Ronaldo has held his place as the most followed celebrity on the platform and now has 155 million followers.
The star however in Spetember took a break from social media to focus on her mental health.
Gomez told Hearst’s ELLE US that she doesn’t typically have Instagram on her phone and only accesses her account from a friend’s. “I don’t have my password for Instagram,” she said in her October issue interview. “I have no apps on my phone, no photo editing apps. I have Peak, a brain game.”
“The reason why is, it’s not real to me,” she added. “I know my voice is very prominent, but I’m not careless with it. I’m selective. I’m not trying to hide. That’s my life. I’m living it the way I want to live it. But it’s about making a conscious effort—if I can have a moment to be with my friends, I’ll take that time. So I don’t have any of it. I had to make that decision.”
Recently, Grande courted controversy after a disagreement with producers on what song she’d be allowed to sing, she ended up pulling out of performing at the Grammys entirely.
The 25-year-old singer recently released new album thank u, next’s first two singles, the surprise-released title track and “7 rings,” which Esquire US says warps the familiar melody of The Sound of Music’s classic “My Favorite Things” into a three-minute master class in female bravado, each debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. “thank u, next” has practically become canon in 2019 colloquialism.
The song’s music video became YouTube’s most-viewed music video in 24 hours following its release with 55.4 million streams in a single day and right now, the album is already sitting atop the iTunes Top Albums chart in sales.
