Is a picture is worth a thousand words? How about a hundred million Instagram followers?

What might be commonplace for someone like Cristiano Ronaldo and Ariana Grande, the hundred million follower club is somewhat of an impossibility for most brands.

That makes sense: while celebrity Instagram pages allow its followers a sneak peek at the luxurious lifestyles these celebrities live on the other side of the lens. Yes, that says a lot about the vapid and obsessive culture that we live in, but did you see what Kim Kardashian was wearing the other day? And those boots? We know right.

But every now and again the internet clouds do open up, and allow a single ray of sunshine to light up the noxious ether that is social media in 2019. And this month, it’s the National Geographic Instagram account – which has just become the world’s first brand to hit 100 million followers.
