The Broadway classic starts showing in August of 2019

“The Phantom of the Opera is there…” Well, it’ll be here in Dubai, soon.

The Dubai Opera has announced that next year’s blockbuster production will be Andrew Lloyd Webber’s, The Phantom of the Opera. The stage show will begin selling tickets to the award-winning Broadway show in the New Year, with the first curtain raised in the autumn.

The Phantom of the Opera is based on a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux, and it was first published as a serialization back in September 1909. But most people will be aware of the story of the titular Phantom that ‘haunts’ said opera house after it was made into the critically-acclaimed Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber back in 1986.

Since then, the show has gone on to become the longer-running show in the history of Broadway – musical or play – having performed more than 10,000 performances at the Majestic Theatre in New York.

When it first opened back in 1986, it immediately won the Oliver Award, quickly followed by a Tony for Best Musical in 1988. Until recently, it was the most financially successful entertainment event in history (until The Lion King surpassed in in 2014).

It has gone on to gross receipts of more than US$5.6 billion in its 22-year run, and has been seen by more than 130 million across 145 cities and 27 countries. This year will see another country and city added to that list.

Sitting alongside current productions of The Phantom of the Opera in London and New York, Dubai’s own version will open in the Autumn of 2019. Here’s what you can expect when tickets finally go on sale:
