New cinema concept offers a new sense of scale, and it’s coming to Reel Cinemas in Dubai Mall

There’s a whole new type of cinema landing in Dubai, that aims to offer peerless-viewing of your favourite films.

The 270-degree screen offers IMAX-levels of ‘phoar’ and will open up at Reel Cinemas in The Dubai Mall later this year. Dubbed ‘ScreenX’ it will be one of the first of its kind in the Middle East.

Created in 2012, ScreenX is a new type of cinema format – similar in a way to 4Dx (the multisensory cinema technology that uses motion, smell and physical effects like water).

The film technology allows films to be projected on to three walls, far bigger than a traditional screen, lettings watchers turn their heads to see different parts of the film.

There are currently only 142 of these screens in the world, primarily in Korea and Japan.

Here’s what it looks like in person:

According to Damien Latham – chief executive of Emaar Entertainment – this will be a film-going experience to remember:

“ScreenX will be a leading addition to our technology showcase that assures a stunning 270-degree panoramic film viewing experience that will further cement our market leadership. This is part of the transformation we are bringing across our cinemas by bringing innovative technology to the region first.” Created in 2012, ScreenX is a new cinema format along with 4DX, the multisensory cinema technology which includes motion and environmental effects.

That’s what we know. What we don’t know is how much these tickets will cost, when it will be properly open and what it will do to your neck after three hours of looking left, right, center and down (when you reach for the popcorn, natch).
