Paul Pogba is finally a Manchester United player… again. After what turned into the longest transfer saga of the summer, the French midfielder finally agreed to re-join the club that he left in 2011, but not before the Premier League team agreed to pay Italian side Juventus a word-record Dhs424 million transfer fee for his services.
In a prepared statement the 23-year-old, who signed a five-year deal, added: “This is the right club for me to achieve everything I hope to.”
The transfer surpasses the Dhs405 million that Real Madrid paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale two summers ago.
Although the announcement was officially made this morning but the player’s agent couldn’t help but break the news late last night on Twitter:
The sheer amount of money involved is staggering with statisticians (and sports fans) frantically hammering numbers into calculators to make up their own opinions if the sum spent on one player is worth it.
Reports in Italy were claiming that for a similar transfer fee that Juventus will receive for Paul Pobga, the Italian club was able to build its state-of-the-art Juventus Stadium five years ago.
But that is immaterial now the deal is done, and ask any United fan if they are excited that the Frenchman has finally returned to the club, and the answer most certainly will be: ‘yes’.
