While neither the Gregorian, Hijiri nor any other calendars state that the world will be ending in 2022 like how the Mayans said the end of the world would be in 2012, AI-generated selfies might have given us an idea of what the last day on Earth might look like.

A TikTok account called Robot Overloards had asked DALL-E2, an AI-image generator to show him what the last selfie ever taken on Earth might look like and the images look like something straight out of a horror movie.

It just goes to show that even when the world is ending, people will still be doing anything to get Instafamous. Even if it is literally just for five minutes of fame.

Given the fact that the people’s skin seems to be burned off and there’s a thick cloud of smoke in the air, it’s likely that the DALL-E2 AI believes that nuclear warfare will be what causes the end of the world. The TikTok user asked the same question on three further occasions which presented additional terrifying selfies.

What’s interesting but scary is that, the AI didn’t just grab unused footage from Hollywood movies to create these images. Robot Overloards has shared many videos of different questions he’s asked the AI and on one occasion, asked the AI to generate pictures of Stockholm, Sweden and what a Swedish person looks like and the results were shockingly realistic. Making one question how accurate the images of the final selfies really are.

DALL-E2 is the successor to the original DALL-E which was created by research and deployment company OpenAI in January 2021. The company describe it on their website as being a neural network that creates images from text captions for a wide range of concepts expressible in natural language.

The AI supposedly got its name from WALL-E, the robot from the 2008 animated film. WALL-E stands for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class, and DALL-E is a portmanteau of WALL-E and the Spanish surrealist artist, Salvador Ali. It’s clear to see why OpenAI went with that name because the AI can certainly create some surreal looking images.

While the scary videos have gone viral, OpenAI have stated that they’ve “limited the ability for DALL-E2 to generate violent, hate or adult images so the gadget should remain harmless to users besides potentially giving them nightmares.
