Google just killed its tablet division

Google has said that its Pixel Slate will be the last official tablet it will produce.

The company has said it will be stopping development on the second Pixelbook, as well as halting production on two as yet unreleased tablets.

Google has said its discontinuing tablet support so that it can double-down on its Pixelbook laptop portfolio.

According to industry sources, Google no longer wanted to compete with the likes of Apple in the tablet space. Apple’s iPads – whose software has come on leaps and bounds over the years – has only gotten better with age. Evidently, not so with Google’s tablets.

While Google’s hardware engineers will now be 100 per cent committed to laptop development, Rick Osterloh – Google’s Senior VP or hardware – has said the company is still committed to working with partners on tablet devices.

According to Osterloh, “Android & Chrome OS teams are 100% committed for the long-run on working with our partners on tablets for all segments of the market.”
