Releasing likely after Spider-Man 2 in 2023, the game has set the internet ablaze

Critically acclaimed developer Insomniac Games dropped a trailer for a brand a new Wolverine game that they’re working on recently, and we can’t get over it.

According to Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac, while they were working on Marvel’s Spider-Man, they were discussing other characters in the Marvel universe they really wanted to explore and a certain short tempered Canadian kept coming up.

“Back when we were working on Marvel’s Spider-Man, there would be times where all of us – Insomniac, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel – would brainstorm together about the future beyond the web-slinger. And even in those early discussions, Wolverine continually came up as the character we’d be really stoked to work on together.”

Die hard Wolvie fans will notice a few easter eggs in the Marvel’s Wolverine trailer. The first is a sign on the wall that indicates Logan is sitting at The Princess Bar, a venue he co-owns and frequently visits under his secret identity of ‘Patch’ when he’s in Madripoor. A fictional island in the Marvel universe located in Southeast Asia. You can also see a tourist poster for the island on the wall. Another little egg is the ‘HLK-181’ license plate which refers to The Incredible Hulk issue 181 comic book which marked the first appearance of Wolverine where he was tasked with taking down the Hulk.

While being featured in many team up games such as X-Men Legends, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and the upcoming Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Wolverine has only had two solo adventure games. X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge (2003) which despite featuring Hugh Jackman on the cover, had nothing to do plot wise with the X-Men movies as it was an original story with a comic book art style. The cast featured Mark Hamill who did a great job at voicing the gruff Logan and Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Professor X. The game featured fun stealth and combat gameplay. Next was the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game which came out in 2009. This title was tied into the movie release that year and Hugh Jackman actually voiced Wolverine for that wonderfully violent game.

Insomniac seem to have their hands full as they also dropped the trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While the trailer was amazing, we knew it was coming and some of what to expect in the trailer such as more interaction with Peter Parker and Miles Morales, even Venom who was teased in the post credit scene of the first game. However, more of us probably went “oh snikt!” the second we saw those claws pop in the Marvel’s Wolverine teaser trailer.

No release date was given for Marvel’s Wolverine but we can assume that it won’t arrive until 2023 after Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is released. The title is exclusive to PlayStation 5 so our sincerest apologies go out to Xbox owners. Stay tuned for more updates on the ol’ canucklehead.
