The actor drops not so subtle hints on his Instagram story

Ever since announcing that he’s hanging up the claws after Wolverine’s death in 2017’s Logan, rumours have been going around discussing who is next to portray the character in future X-Men films. However, Hugh Jackman’s time as the short tempered Canadian may not be over after all as he shared fan art and a picture with Kevin Feige who created the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jackman had been portraying the character for almost two decades and is the only actor to do so. It was in fact a conversation with Jerry Seinfeld that encouraged him to step down from the role ‘while there’s still something left in tank’. Many fans felt that Logan was the perfect swansong to Hugh’s version of the character.

In his Instagram story, he reposted a story from @bosslogic who posted fan art depicting Wolverine’s claws and then Jackman’s following story was a photo of him and Kevin Feige. Two Marvel related posts in a row has fans speculating that Jackman is perhaps in talks with Disney who create the Marvel movies. An additional story post paid tribute to Richard Donner who passed away on Monday and was known for directing Superman in 1978.

The first X-Men movie came out in 2000 and arguably popularized the superhero genre as the Spider-Man movie was released two years later along with other Marvel characters such as Daredevil, Hulk and Ghost Rider all having their own movies before the MCU even existed.

Now that Disney has purchased Fox who owned the X-Men characters, they’re planning on rebooting the team of mutants at some point in the MCU. Previously, Jackman had stated back in 2017 that he would return to the role of Wolverine if this happened, so now that the X-Men will be in the MCU, Jackman’s comments continue to be flooded with comments begging him to don the adamantium claws again.

If Disney does decide to cast a younger actor, fans are almost certain to criticize Disney. However, this doesn’t mean there can only be one Wolverine. With the Loki series introducing the concept of the multiverse and alternate timelines, who’s to say Jackman can’t portray Old Man Logan? A much older Wolverine from a different timeline where he’s tricked into killing the X-Men and is forced to live with the guilt, vowing to never pop his claws again. But of course something sets him off and he does.

We’ll have to wait a while before the studio announces who will play Wolverine in the MCU as it’ll be a few years before Disney begin work on an X-Men film.
