The headset is rumoured to cost US$3,000 and is aimed at ‘pro’ users

Apple is building a virtual reality headset, and it might be ready as soon as this year.

The product will focus on 3D and virtual reality applications, such as games, video and communication. According to Bloomberg, the device will also have limited augmented reality functionality.

So far, it’s thought that the headset will be standalone and battery-powered, and around about the same size as the Oculus Quest (pictured above). According to sources familiar with the device, it will come with a new Apple chipset (that is thought to be one of the Cupertino company’s fastest ever).

Right now, the world of virtual reality headsets are dominated by Facebook-owned Oculus. The Quest 2 currently costs US$300, but it’s thought that Apple’s version will be susbtantially more expensive.

According to tech insiders, Apple’s VR headset is currently in late prototype stage – which means it could be released as early as this year. That said, Apple prototypes many devices before putting new technology into production.

Apple’s VR headset is thought to cost around US$3,000 when it launches sometime later this year / early 2022.
