The Explore R is based off Land Rover’s Defender off-road vehicle

Land Rover has decided it wants to move into the world of smartphones proper, with its new Explore R model.

The phone was inspired by the automaker’s Defender vehicle, and so naturally it can stand up to a beating. It has been drop tested to heights of almost two metres, and comes with a battery that can handle two full days of use. You also get IP68 and MIL SPEC protection, which means it is fully water, dust and sand proof.

On top of those durability features, the Explore R packs a 5.7-inch HD+ display that is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6. As you’d expect they work while wearing driving gloves, and the phone comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. That can also be expanded via microSD card.

As for the camera, you get a 12-megapixel Sony dual pixel camera at the rear, and an 8-megapixel front-facing.

The Land Rover Explore R is available via the Land Rover website, for around US$535.
