Ubisoft just casually confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will only be backwards compatible for its last generation of PS4 games.
It made the following statement via its PlayStation 5 support website, “Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games.”
During a presentation in back in March, Sony lead PlayStation hardware designer Mark Cerny said that almost all of its 100 top-played PS4 titles would be not just backwards compatible at launch, but would be boosted to reap the better graphical capabilities of the PS5.
They also said that ultimately, most of the current generation of games will work on the PS5 eventually.
“We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5.” Sony has since updated the same blog post, purposefully leaving out exactly when that will happen.
Currently, the PS4 is not compatible with previous PlayStation titles – making it the first from Sony to not be able to play the previous generation of games.
