New clamshell phone will go head-to-head against Motorola’s RAZR

Watch out Motorola, there’s a new foldable clamshell smartphone in town.

Samsung teased its much-touted Galaxy Flip Z earlier today, during the Oscars. Well, we say teased: it showed a commercial for the device during one of the most widely-watched events of the year.

The advertisement hypes up Samsung’s Unpacked event, its annual smartphone launch happening on February 11 in New York. But it gave viewers a pretty good idea what the new Flip Z will look like, and how it will work.

The new smaller phone is more compact than Samsung’s original Galaxy Fold, which was transformed from phone in to tablet. This one is more akin to Motorola’s RAZR, with a clamshell design similar to many 2000-era phones.

Samsung’s commercial shows that there are two screens – the main foldable screen and one on the outside of the device that will show users notifications. Also – when semi-folded – the Flip Z appears to act as its own stand.

The phone will come in at least two colours, according to the ad: black and purple.

Samsung is expected to launch three new phones in the Galaxy S family: the Galaxy S20, a larger Galaxy S20 plus (that is rumoured to have a whopper of a camera) and this foldable, so far dubbed the Flip Z.

We won’t have long to wait for the announcements – the launch is slated for tomorrow afternoon in New York City.
