You can now flag information on Instagram

Instagram has been known to go against everything the platform has stood for in the past. From trialling hiding likes to now tackling fake engagement, there’s a new initiative on their radar. Tackling misinformation.

Instagram will soon have a new feature available where you can flag posts that spread misinformation. The posts will not get removed however, they will not show up in searches neither will they show up in hashtag searches.

The new feature will be available at the end of August.

Previously, Instagram began to block hashtags that promoted misinformation about vaccine safety. Now, the Facebook owned photo sharing platform is taking it one step further by allowing you to flag fake information.

How will it work? There will be an option to flag posts by clicking the three dot menu on the right hand side of the app. Once the post is reported, it will be reviewed by fact checkers.

Instagram chief, Adam Mosseri, expressed his thoughts on the new feature and said: “I’m proud that, starting today, people can let us know if they see posts on Instagram they believe may be false.”

Not only is Instagram aiming to get rid of false information, the platform is also aiming to train its AI to detect misinformation without relying on humans.
