Samsung just unpacked (geddit) its latest range of smartphones; and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is making a bid for the title of the Android photography king (thanks to one of the highest pixel counts ever seen in a phone camera).

Samsung’s Unpacked 2023 event saw the release of the Ultra alongside the S23 and S23 Plus, which are all set to hit the market soon (more on those later).

The Ultra is the star of the show, featuring a new HP2 sensor from Samsung, allowing it to take 8K video or 4K HDR at 60fps, 200MP stills at 15 frames per second and utilizing 16-to-1 pixel binning for excellent low-light performance. It’s joined by a 12MP ultrawide and two 10MP telephotos, one for 3x optical zoom and one for 10x. Additionally, there’s a 12MP selfie camera.

In non-tech speak, that means this is quite possibly the most competent smartphone camera on the market.

The stellar screen is a 6.8-incher, 3088×1440 resolution AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s also HDR10+ compatible, and is paired with Dolby Atmos-enabled stereo speakers, and packs a fingerprint sensor below the display.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU is paired with either 8GB or 12GB RAM, and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of internal storage – with the option to expand with microSD.

There’s a 5000mAh battery that can charge at 45W or 10W wirelessly, plus a reverse wireless charging feature. The S Pen digital stylus is back, and the phone is IP68 water-resistant.

And what about the S23 and S23 Plus?

The Galaxy S23 is the smallest of the bunch, boasting a 6.1-inch display.

It and the S23 Plus (which has a 6.6-inch display) both have the same 2340×1080 resolution, AMOLED panels with 120 Hz adaptive refresh rates, and can show HDR10+ content.

The S23’s glass is flat, unlike the more expensive S23 Ultra which has a subtly curved screen.

Both the S23 and S23 Plus have taken similar design cues from the S23 Ultra, removing the raised section around the rear cameras to give the lenses a floating appearance. Additionally, both are IP68 dust and water-resistant.

The rear cameras are mostly the same as from the Galaxy S22 series, consisting of a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto for 3x optical zoom. 8K video recording and 4K at 60fps capabilities are available, and the front camera has been upgraded to 12MP.

Performance-wise, the S23 and S23 Plus both have a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8GB of RAM.

The S23 can be purchased with either 128GB or 256GB of storage, while the S23 Plus can be bought with either 256GB or 512GB. Both have the ability to add extra capacity with a microSD card.
