We already know that McLaren was going to unveil its new electrified supercar this year. But for the first time we now know what it’s going to be called.
The British automotive marque kicked off the week by introducing its latest high-performance vehicle will be called the ‘Artura’.
The supercar maker also explained that the electric car – which was going to be part of the Sports Collection – will now sit alone, slotting between the McLaren GT and the 720S.
Although there have been hybrid McLarens in the past – the limited-run P1 hypercar and also Speedtail – the Artura will be the first to enter into series production.
While the firm has launched reasonably few details, we do expect that the “High-Performance Hybrid supercar” will be powered by a new twin-turbo V-6 engine. And the electric motor will certainly be just as effective as the company’s larger-capacity V-8s and will offer improved torque reaction at reduced power rates.
McLaren has yet to let us know what the Artura’s expected range will be.
Other features include an all-new carbon-fiber monoque framework– called McLaren Carbon Lightweight Design (MCLA)– particularly developed for hybrid powertrains. This will certainly keep the vehicle’s weight down despite the battery’s significant heft.
“Every element of the Artura is all-new—from the platform architecture and every part of the High-Performance Hybrid powertrain, to the exterior body, interior and cutting-edge driver interface—but it draws on decades of McLaren experience in pioneering super-lightweight race and road car technologies to bring all of our expertise in electrification to the supercar class,” CEO Mike Flewitt said in a statement.
No release date is known for the Artura as of yet, however McLaren has said that the car will go on sale during the first half of 2021.
Again, we have no pricing information as yet but considering the car is slotting between the GT and 720S mode – expect it to cost between US$220,000 and US$300,000.
