And it will be hiring the game’s head writer to help do so

After some long-drawn out talks and rumours involving HBO’s adaptation of the highly-celebrated Sony videogame The Last of Us, the streaming network has now confirmed that it will be developing the game into a TV show.

The company says that it will be bringing some top talent to help adapt the video game (which traditionally, does not necessarily work out for the best) including the game’s head writer Nick Druckmann, Chernobyl’s Chery Strauss and Craig Mazin, as well as Naughty Dog (the game’s developers) President Evan Wells and Carter Swan from Sony PlayStation Productions.

The series is said to be taking the plot from the first game’s events, when Joel and Ellie must travel across post-apocalyptic America after escaping from a terrible quarantine zone brought about by fungus-based zombies.

“Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own,” said HBO’s VP of programming Francesca Orsi.

“With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, this series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of The Last of Us games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga. We’re delighted to partner with Naughty Dog, Word Games, Sony and PlayStation to adapt this epic, powerfully immersive story.”

Unfortunately, that’s all we know about the series for now. Considering HBO is only now putting together a development team – and there’s no acting talent currently involved – we’d bet it won’t begin proper production until sometime next summer.

That would point to either an early 2022 release date at the earliest.
