Italian sports car-maker Ferrari has said that it is holding off launching a battery-powered green motor until ‘after 2025’.
The firm cited insufficient battery technology for the wait.
Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri told reporters that while, “we are certainly studying fully electric, for the current foreseeable future” hybrids and fully-combustion engine cars were the preferred option.
“My sense is the electric (car) will come out after 2025. The battery technology is not where it should be yet,” he said.
“There are still significant issues in terms of autonomy, in terms of speed of recharging,” he said.
Last month, Camilleri mentioned that Ferrari customers were showing interest in hybrid models. However, the company was “taking its time” with a fully electric car.
Ferrari has long dwindled over embracing newer, cleaner engine technology. It was late to the hybrid sports car game. The LaFerrari came out well after rival cars from the likes of McLaren and Porsche, and Ferrari only announced the marquis’ first plug-in hybrid (the SF90 Stradale) earlier this year.
The Italian marquis has found it challenging keeping the brand DNA in check while embracing newer – quieter and greener – motor tech.
