Bugatti has done it again, breaking records with dizzyingly fast cars. This time it’s more special though as the 300 MPH has finally been broken.
Bugatti is a car company everyone has heard of but few people have seen in person. The cars are exceptionally well-built, exceptionally rare, and exceptionally expensive.
In 2005 the French automotive company sent ripples across the world as it became official that its Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 was the fastest car in the world. Almost 15 years ago, Bugatti was capable of making a car that could clock in at 253.81 MPH.
The company then snatched back this world record again in 2010 with its Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport which achieved 267.856 MPH. In 2017 a company called Koenigsegg, a Swedish car maker, took the title with its Agera RS coming in at 277.87 MPH.
Fast-forward to 2019 and Bugatti is back with a winner. Not only is it a winner, but it is the first hypercar to ever reach the elusive and sought after 300 MPH mark.
Using one of its newer models: the Bugatti Chiron, the company managed to hit the landmark pace thanks to some modifications to the car. Ordinary 2016 Chirons are far from slow as it is, with 1,479 BHP under the hood and a top speed estimate of 249 MPH.
This Chiron was built with one purpose: to break 300 MPH. It’s a prototype version of the Chiron, still using the 8-litre, quad-turbo W16 however this car has 1,578 BHP. The Chiron was modified to extend the body kit by 25cm which was done so to reduce drag as much as possible. The car also has a “laser-assisted ride height” so that the power from the wheels is transferred to the road as effectively as possible.
Shotgun tailpipes were added to reduce drag and increase aero efficiency, the rear wing and airbrake have been replaced with an integrated wing design, and the interior has been totally stripped. Thankfully the team decided to add a full roll cage and safety seat. Thanks to all these modifications, the car hit a top speed of 304.77 MPH according to Bugatti
Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti, told TopGear:
“Bugatti has once again shown what it’s capable of. With this new record of the Chiron we enter again uncharted territory. Never before has a series manufacturer reached this high speed… Our goal was to be the first manufacturer ever to reach the magic 300 MPH mark. We have now achieved this — making ourselves, the entire team and myself, incredibly proud.”
