Sony’s CEO announces they are sold out of PlayStation 5 consoles

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is almost certainly the gadget-to-be-had this festive season. Unfortunately, there won’t be many being gifted in December – because they are totally sold out.

Speaking to a Russian news agency, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has said that the PlayStation 5 is currently sold out.

Every PS5 that has been manufactured so far this year is accounted for.

“Everything is sold,” said Ryan. “Absolutely everything is sold… I’ve spent much of the last year trying to be sure that we can generate enough demand for the product. And now in terms of my executive bandwidth, I’m spending a lot more time on trying to increase supply to meet that demand.”

The CEO said that releasing a next-generation console in the middle of a global pandemic has been quite challenging, and has led to the shortages of the console.

“Of all the things that I’ve learned this year, one is that I wouldn’t plan on doing another big console launch in the midst of a global pandemic, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody else,” he said.

“It’s been difficult, it’s been challenging from the production side, not being able to get anybody into the factories in Asia… Before we started production, we had to do all the manufacturing preparation by camera remotely. I mean, just imagine that for a precision device like the PlayStation 5.”

But there may be some light at the end of the tunnel. While all current PS5s have been accounted for, many of those will have been snapped up by retailers.

Here’s how to see if you can still bag yourself a PlayStation 5 in the Middle East.
