Facebook has finally unveiled its long-rumoured Livestream gaming app, available today on Google Play.
The app is free to download and is without ads (for now). Currently, it is only available via Android (however, an iOS rollout is expected over the next week or so pending a green light from Apple).
The general idea behind the new app is to take the fight to both Google-owned YouTube and Amazon’s Twitch streaming platform.
Currently, most gaming live streamers use powerful PCs to create their content – something which your average gamer doesn’t have access too. Facebook Gaming has been designed to capitalize on amateur players who game primarily via mobile phone.
The apps ‘Go Live’ feature will record your screen in just a few taps of your touchscreen. “People are watching streams, and they’re like, ‘I want to be a streamer,’ said Facebook’s vice president for gaming to The New York Times.
“With ‘Go Live’ it’s literally just a few clicks, and then you’re live, you’re a streamer’.
Creators will be able to stream via their personal Facebook pages.
Gaming is one of a few industries to be positively affected by the coronavirus, are social distancing measures set in across the world many non-gamers are increasingly interested in playing online – amateur or otherwise – for the social aspects of it.
