September marks a welcome return to videogame season (after the relative drought of the summer, where major developers tend to hold off release triple A titles) and this weekend is a great example of that.
We’ve got Borderlands 3 dropping, a new Pro Evolution Soccer, and also Gears of War to play. Here’s the biggest video game releases of the week:
Borderlands 3
Technically the fifth game in the shoot-and-loot franchise, Borderlands 3 pairs goofy characters, a witty storyline and randomly generated guns. This year sees the return of your favourite series characters, as well as new planets to explore as you attempt to take down this game’s big bads – a pair of videogame streamers hell-bent on destroying the galaxy.
eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer 2020
PES has only gone and rebranded itself, with a new eFootball monicker and a friendlier approach to licensing players and teams. This year sees Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Juventus, Arsenal and more finally join the ranks. You also get an improved Master League (yes, sadly still no UEFA and Europa leagues as yet) but the graphics have been given a bump.
Gears 5
While those willing to shell out for the Ultimate Edition have been playing for almost a week now, proper Gears 5 is available right now. The game has received some very positive reviews, and just toppled Fortnite as the number one game played on Xbox One. The return of Gears sees a more in-depth campaign, extended multiplayer and new protagonist Kait as she leads her crew on another big mission.
GreedFall
Think Dragons Age or Assassins Creed, with a bit more heart and soul. GreedFall is based around a newly discovered island with magical properties, which is being torn apart for resources by 17th century colonists. When diplomat De Sardet arrives, it’s up to the player to unite the fractions of the island – either fairly, foully or forcefully.

There’s a train leaving the station, but someone forgot to build the tracks. This dinky indie game tests your speed and skill as players rush to lay down railroad through field, forest and mountain, while making upgrades to every station.
