The stylised evening offers a unique dining concept and a fake pop-quiz on grape-based drinks

When the evening’s sommelier Marené Wentzel presents to you two glasses of grape, asks you to take a bite of your Panzanella, taste each grape respectively, then report back to her, without panic – because there is no wrong answer – which one is best paired to the dish, you panic.

The setting is Marea’s exclusive private-dining room, and you are surrounded by oenophiles and gastro-buffs alike. You were the first one to be asked, and you are without question the least qualified to answer – the sharks / sommelier are circling. You mumble and stumble across your words, finally and incoherently concluding that Glass A was your winner, then your companion, to the right, who just so happens to be a WSET Level 2 qualified woman, agrees with you. The woman to her right however goes for Glass B. The man opposite her is a fellow Glass A supporter. This continues across the table, in a steady A, A, B, A, B, B rhythm until we land back to the sommelier, who is faced with fifteen pairs of inquisitive, childlike students who want their midterm paper grade back. The answer never comes, there really was no right answer, just an engaging discussion, Michelin star-standard Italian food and really, really good grape-based drink.

Marea, DIFC’s most trendy present from New York, has partnered up with Maison Imperiale to launch a monthly supper club, and if our experience was anything to go by we recommend you book in pretty darn quick.

Our pairing themed evening saw us sampling Agnello lamb and (quite possibly the best, ever) beef carpaccio with frisee and mascarpone alongside a crisp glass of golden liquid courage. While the quality of food at this see-and-be-seen hotspot does not change, the monthly theme does.

Head over to DIFC to experience the 29th of March’s ‘Pasta Making Experience’, or meet us there on Sunday the 15th for ‘Art 101’ and a glass of something good.
