Fusion food can be a bit hit or miss.
Yes, the combination of two different cuisines might create something new, but there’s no guarantee that it will create something tasty.
That’s why I tend to stay as far away from any restaurant that describes itself using the term ‘fusion’. For proof as to why fusion food can often go awry, look no further than the Italian Burrito or the Sushi Taco. Yuck.
But there is one restaurant in the city that has made a name for itself (a positive name) for blending two cuisines – Middle Eastern and Asian – together in some fun, exciting and most importantly – edible – ways.
Enter BB Social, which usually operates out of its three-storey DIFC location but has now started delivery food to hungry punters around Dubai.
BB Social: What’s on the menu?
BB Social is known for its Asian meets Middle Eastern food, so it should come as no surprise that the dishes they serve go far beyond the traditional meat and two veg.
The delivery menu includes the likes of cauliflower popcorn served with truffle sauce, super green hummus, superfood salad (including grilled pineapple and coconut), a wagyu katsu brioche sandwich, a mushroom barley risotto, chestnut bao, and fried calamari.
Oh, and the bar team at BB Social also throw in a watermelon mocktail, too.
BB Social: How’s the food?
BB Social’s food is definitely a mix of flavours (the hummus is made from edamame, avocado and spinach, and there’s not a chickpea in sight), but the concept never overwhelms the food.
Most fusion restaurants are more concerned with making something ‘out there’ (see: Italian burrito) that they ignore how the dish tastes. Not at BB Social.
There are some very good and very big flavours, and you’ll quickly stop worrying about which cuisine is which, in favour of taking a big forkful.
BB Social: The verdict?
BB Social handles the usual blunt force trauma of smashing two cuisines together until they make something new with a deft hand. While their food is fusion, the concept doesn’t get in the way of the flavour.
And the fact that you can now get its food delivered direct to your door can only be a good thing.
