When it comes to filmmaking, Saudi Arabia is proving again that it has the ambition to play in the big leagues. Not only is the KSA making its debut at The Cannes Film Festival later this month, Saudi is back with the 10th edition of the Saudi Film Festival.
And it began May 2 lasting until next Thursday, May 9, and will be organised by the Saudi Cinema Association and supported by the Film Commission of the Ministry of Culture.
Featuring 76 film screening and 53 titles vying for 36 awards, the festival will also offer a variety of workshops, seminars, lectures, book signings, and opportunities for local and regional filmmakers to come together for the week long event.
But what is perhaps most exciting is the hosting of a screenwriting competition. And lord knows we need original storytelling now more than ever.
“This event is fast developing into a must-attend festival across the GCC film community,” said Festival director Ahmed Al-Mulla. “This year’s 10th edition is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet.”
In addition to the original categories, this year will be adding an additional prize: The Golden Palm, which will be presented to the best Saudi environmental documentary, and a second place award for the best animated short film covering the same topic.
Amplifying its scope to encompass a broader array of Arab and international productions, The Saudi Film Festival also functions as a platform for production companies, producers, and filmmakers to bolster their projects within the production market.
But it doesn’t end there. Additionally, a collection of books will undergo translation and publication as part of a series hoping to enhance the Arab library in the realms of filmmaking and cinematic literature.
It wasn’t long ago that Vertigo films worked together with AlUla Creates to celebrate young and upcoming female Saudi directors, so the kingdom’s rapid expansion of artistic endeavour is undoubtedly some of the most exciting new additions to the rapidly growing region.
Bottom line: heck to the yeah, bro. We are pumped.
