The film managed the feat even with theaters closed in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, with The Mauritanian and the rerelease of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers also opening in the top five

Tom & Jerry: The Movie, a live-action/animation hybrid adaptation of the classic series of animated shorts, has crossed the $1 million mark at the UAE box office in its third week.

The film sold more than 16,000 tickets in its third weekend, a drop of just over 21 percent from its second weekend. After three weeks, admissions have reached nearly 90,000.

Cinemas in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain remain closed due to COVID-19, with cinemas in other emirates operating at a reduced capacity to prevent spread of the virus.

Tom & Jerry, which brings the timeless comic struggle between cat and mouse to the modern day, stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael Peña and Rob Delaney as employees in a hotel who are attempting to get rid of Jerry the mouse with the help of Tom the cat ahead of a celebrity wedding taking place in the establishment.

The film opened in the United States last weekend, both in cinemas and on the streaming service HBO Max.
The property is beloved throughout the Middle East and has been for generations since the property’s debut in 1940, with cartoons still regularly airing on television in the region.

The Mauritanian starring Tahar Rahim as a detainee at Guantanamo Bay and won a Golden Globe on Sunday for supporting actress Jodie Foster opened in the number two spot distantly behind Tom & Jerry with nearly 6,000 admissions.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the second film in the Peter Jackson trilogy remastered in 4K by director Peter Jackson released as part of a special month-long event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first film’s release, opened in 5th for the weekend, bringing in 1,500 people. The first film remained in the top 25, bringing in 3,213 people in 10 days.

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which won Best Picture in 2004 at the Academy Awards, its set to be released next week.

Judas and the Black Messiah, an Oscar-hopeful and Golden Globe winner for supporting actor Daniel Kaluuya, which brings to life the story of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton, fell from 8th to 18th, selling only 354 tickets and 2,545 since it opened.

The Little Things, starring Denzel Washington, Jared Leto and Rami Malek, held strong at number 7, bringing in another 1,266 people for a total of 46,278.

New releases Alive, Body Brokers, and The Host all opened out of the top 10, each bringing in less than 1000 people in their first weekend of release.

Golden Globe winner Soul, which won for Best Animated Film and Best Score, held onto the number 10 spot with nearly 1000 admissions and 109,325 total.
