The Scorpion King was The Rock’s first ever film role

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s first film role was in the second movie in The Mummy franchise, and his appearance appears to have left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth (even his).

Which is why Hollywood’s most bankable actor seeks to rectify that, announcing that he will be rebooting the Scorpion King franchise.

According to reports, The Rock will not be reprising his role as Mathayus due to a booked film schedule, but he will be producing the movie. Universal Pictures is currently on the lookout for a director, and lead actor, to play the main character.

The original film – which came out in 2002 – follows the legendary hero Mathayus, however the new film will take place in more contemporary times.

While that could mean the Scorpion King will be set in the modern world, we think it will hark back to its source material like The Mummy, and happen around the 1900s.

“The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honored and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation,” said Johnson.

“I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hardworking actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.”
