James Cameron’s Avatar 2 film won’t hit cinemas until December 2021, but that doesn’t mean we need to wait the next 18-months without a glimpse of the long-awaited sequel.
The official Avatar account posted this behind-the-scenes image shot on the set of Avatar 2, including actors Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Cliff Curtis; on an underwater set.
“From the set of the sequels: Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet, and Cliff Curtis taking a break from underwater performance capture for a quick photo,” the official Avatar movie account tweeted
“Fun fact: Much of the performance capture took place in this 900,000 gallon tank, built specifically for the sequels.”
Winslet joins the cast of Avatar 2 as new character Ronal, while Curtis will be playing a new lead character role. Saldana and Worthington will both return as Neytiri and Jake Sully, respectively.
“She was really excited about doing the water work and at her peak, I think she held her breath for seven-and-a-half minutes… during the training,” Cameron admitted, talking about Winslet last year.
“She was regularly doing two-or-three minute scenes underwater, acting and swimming. She truly embraced the physicality of the character.”
Production on the Avatar sequel was shut down in March, due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, it was announced that the film would continue shooting in New Zealand, as the country has new health and safety production protocols concerning COVID-19.
Avatar 2 is expected to release on December 17, 2020. There are three more Avatar movies expected in the future, with release dates set for 2023, 2025, and 2027.
