The first title from Amazon Game Studios – Crucible – is destined for release on May 20.
The free-to-play game is equal part battle arena and team shooter. It’s evident from taking a look at the game, that Amazon is keen to bite a chunk out of the likes of Overwatch, Fortnite and Valorant. The PC version of the game will launch first, and console versions are expected later in the year.
At launch, the game will feature six characters and three game modes.
The Heart of Hives mode features two teams of four fighting against each other (similar then to Counter-Strike and Overwatch), , along with a selection of AI enemies (which borrows from Dota 2 and League of Legends).
Harvester Command mode features eight players per side, competing to collect the most resources so they can level up their characters and gain power advantage over the other team.
Alpha Hunters, on the other hand, is the game’s Battle Royale mode – which apes titles such as PUBG, Fortnite and Apex Legends. While it only allows for 16-players at a time (far below its counterparts), the mode throws curveballs into the mix by allowing you to build temporary alliances.
This is the first game from Amazon’s Game Studios in 2020, with a Massively Multiplayer Online title New World expected in August.
While Amazon is new to the game-making business, it owns Twitch – which has tens of millions of viewers. And the games that tend to do well on Twitch, also do well in the real world.
