Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson said she never wanted to do a dedicated Black Widow film, saying that it would be too derivative to be interesting.
“I don’t want to do the same thing that I’d already done before,” said Johansson about the role. “I was like, I think I’m good.”
Fortunately, Marvel executives managed to convince her to take up the role once more time.
She told studio bosses, “If we [were] going to do this, it had to be creatively fulfilling. I’ve been working for such a long time, and I have to feel like I’m challenged.
Apparently, it was director Cate Shortland that changed her mind, as they “bonded over stories about trust and about intimacy and about women surviving.”
Shortland told Entertainment Weekly that, “You didn’t have to be a superhero to identify with a woman who has had a really tough childhood and has survived and has a huge heart and helps other people.”
The film’s final trailer was released yesterday, ahead of its May release.

Johansson has played the Black Widow character across multiple films, including Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and in all four Avenger’s movies.
This is slated to be her final film as the character – although, you never know with Marvel. One fan theory points Johansson’s character still being alive: down to the same technology introduced by Arnim Zola in The Winter Soldier.
