Though its lack of diversity came under fire at the Oscars warm-up act, nobody could criticise the red carpet

Unlike most years, it was a big night at the Baftas 2020. What’s normally a relatively conservative, restrained affair had lots of jokes, and self-awareness, and everything awards ceremonies aren’t normally famous for. Rebel Wilson poked fun at the feline Frankenstein that was Cats. Joaquin Phoenix took aim at the systemic racism of the film industry. Hugh Grant even had in-jokes with Renee Zellweger, and we all laughed and remembered the gentle days of Bridget Jones.

But besides everything that happened onstage, it was also a big night for menswear. The staid nature of awards season so often extends to the red carpet. But that just wasn’t the case here. Al Pacino wore some New Balances, John Boyega gave the suit the scarlet letter, and there were lots and lots jewel-tone dinner jackets.

And here are all the finest looks from the night itself.
