The battle for your streaming dollars is heating up (and it was already well past boiling).
Netflix, Amazon, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV+, etc. are all busy fighting for your time, attention and money – and to do so, have produced billions of dollars’ worth of original movies and TV shows.
But screen time is not enough, those companies also want the time you spend on the daily commute while driving and in the shower.
While audio platform Spotify has already made aggressive moves (it bought Gimlet media and Anchor) in order to produce original podcast series, it has not gone without notice. And Apple now wants in on the action.
Obviously, a company like Apple is well-versed in the importance of Podcasts (iTunes pretty much invented the genre on the iPod) but to date produces nothing internally. That’s all about to change.
It is planning to release a slew of companion podcasts for its original programming, followed by exclusives that will only be available via an Apple TV+ or Apple Music subscription.
But it will continue to have stiff competition. Netflix has a dozen shows already, from behind-the-scenes podcasts for its hit series that including interviews with major cast, to dedicated podcasts such as “You Can’t Make This Up” and “The Human Algorithm”.
If Apple were to do something similar, expect insights from the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell (of The Morning Show) as well as Steven Spielberg (from Amazing Stories).
