Antebellum – a new film by the producer of Get Out and Us – has just released its first trailer, and it’s set to be another creepy social horror movie fever dream.
The film stars Janelle Monae, who has quickly gone from avant-garde R&B musician to powerful screen actress. Previously, she stole the show in 2016’s Moonlight. This will be her first leading role.
According to the movie’s synopsis, the film looks to be spooky:
“Successful author Veronica (Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.”
The film appears to suggest there are two distinct timelines, an obvious play at social commentary between pre-Civil War times and present day. Given the Sam McKittrick, the producer behind social thrillers Get Out and Us – is also behind Antebellum, we think it’s a safe bet to suggest the film will be heavy on the discussion of race.
The cast also includes Marque Richardson II, Eric Lange, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Rob Aramayo, Lily Cowles, and Jena Malone.
Elsewhere, Janelle Monae was earlier up for Album of the Year for her release Dirty Computer. And next, she will be taking over from Julia Roberts in the Amazon series Homecoming.
Antebellum will be released by Lionsgate on April 24, 2020.
