Starring as Black Adam, the iconic anti-hero and Shazam nemesis

Dwayne Johnson has confirmed he will star as one of DC Comics’ most iconic anti-heroes; Black Adam

The Rock is finally getting a major role in a superhero film (his very own film in fact). The wrestler-turned-actor took to Twitter to confirm that Black Adam will begin production in July of next year.

The confirmation comes after years of on and off rumours surrounding a film baseda round the anti-hero. According to Deadline, Johnson was slated to take the role of Black Adam back in April for the debut Shazam! film. It was later decided that Johnson’s involvement in the project was worthy of more than a supporting role and talks for a dedicated Black Adam film began.

The project then dipped in and out of development, with rumours of Johnson even playing Shazam instead. The role was eventually given to Zachary Levi and the film grossed an impressive US $362.7 million.

Teth-Adam was the son of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II, later being granted the abilities that would have him become Mighty Adam.

Mighty Adam protected ancient Egypt from harm for centuries, though later became corrupted and became Black Adam.

Black Adam drew his powers the same way Shazam did, by saying the word ‘Shazam’ and being granted the ancient powers of the Elder Gods. Importantly, Black Adam was granted the ‘Shazam’ powers before Shazam himself was.

Fast forward to the modern world, an ancestor of Black Adam is granted these same powers and too becomes Black Adam. The anti-hero serves to enforce a harsh ancient form of justice as found in the ancient society his ancestor hailed from.

The details of Johnson’s film are scarce right now. All is known is a 2020 production date and that Johnson will star in the film. Deadline also reports a Shazam! sequel is in the works so perhaps we’ll see the Rock reprise his role there too?
