Netflix has pledged to combat those most nefarious of online streamers: password sharers.
The streaming giant has said it no longer wants its users to be able to share passwords around (with friends, family, ex-girlfriends, etc.) and get away with it. According to Chief Product Officer Greg Peters, Netflix is “continuing to monitor the situation”.
His comment points to the fact that Netflix will soon look at ways in which it can combat the password sharing practice. However, Peters said this would be done in a way which would not alienate the service’s existing user base.
“We’ll see those consumer-friendly ways to push on the edges of that,” Peters said.
“We have no plans to announce at this point in time, in terms of doing something differently.”
Currently, one Netflix account can stream to four devices at any one time. But the number of sign-ins from a single Netflix account is basically unlimited.
Earlier this month, Spotify too began cracking down on password sharers. It now requires members on a family plan to verify they all lived in the same address.
According to a spokesperson for Spotify, “Family members can verify their eligibility by entering their address using Google Maps or enabling location services on their device.”
