The mere mention of a Princess Bride remake yesterday sent the internet into a tailspin.
A rebooted version of the 1980s cult classic was hinted at by Sony Entertainment’s chief executive Tony Vinciquerra, who casually floated the idea in an interview. It prompted hundreds of thousands of fans and celebrities to speak out against the idea.
“There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one,” said Cary Elwes, who starred in the main role of Westley.
“Inconceivable” said actor Wallace Shawn, quoting one of the film’s most famous lines.
“Oh, really?” said actress Jamie Lee Curtis, who is married to Christopher Guest (aka Count Rugen).. “Well, I married the six fingered man, obviously why we have stayed together for 35 years and there is only ONE The Princess Bride and it’s William Goldman and @robreiner’s” she wrote on Twitter.

The 1987 love story was directed by Rob Reiner and written by William Goldman. It quickly became fairytale perfection for an entire generation.
The Princess Bride featured a who’s-who of A-list celebrity talent at the time, including Hollywood stars like Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal and wrestler Andrew the Giant.
Speaking to Variety, Sony Entertainment CEO Vinciquerra said, “We have so many people coming to us saying, ‘We want to remake this show or that show,'” he said. “Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo ‘The Princess Bride.’
The outrage also spread to politics, with Republican senator Ted Cruz tweeting, “DON’T MESS WITH PERFECTION.”
