The United Arab Emirates’ two most famous cities have been ranked as some of the safest places on earth.
The Safe Cities Index 2019 ranks 60 of the world’s most populated cities in terms of safety and security. The index ranks based on digital security, health security, infrastructure and ability to recover from disasters, and personal security.
Digital security refers to cyber security of a city, the protections in place for its systems and databases. Health security refers to systems for medical care and police for public order. Infrastructure refers to investment into the city and how modern it is. It also takes into account disaster-prevention and the speed and efficiency in which a city can recover from disasters. Personal security refers to likelihoods of attacks on citizens, education, political stability and a stable criminal justice system.
Taking all this into consideration, as well as many other factors towards happiness and safety, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have ranked 27th and 28th overall respectively out of the 60 cities. Both cities are deemed safer overall than both Milan and Rome.
Abu Dhabi
They are the highest ranking Middle Eastern cities on the list, with Kuwait City and Riyadh coming in at 38th and 39th respectively. Turkey’s Istanbul comes in at 36th.
Reigning champ for the last five years is Tokyo, calculated as the world’s safest city.
In ‘personal security’ Abu Dhabi and Dubai do very well at positions 11 and 12. Dubai is a new addition to the index this year, along with Copenhagen, which also scores very well, Baku and Lagos.
