Revealed at Disney’s D23 Expo recently, Ms. Marvel joins the long list of Marvel Cinematic Universe TV shows. This show however is the first to have a Muslim lead within the MCU.
If you were inducted into the world of Marvel thanks to the success of its Cinematic Universe, chances are your knowledge of superheroes will not extend beyond the ones you’ve seen in the movies.
With D23 and San Diego Comic-Con, we’re getting introduced to more and more heroes from the comics we’ve not yet seen. One announcement from D23 was the TV series called Ms. Marvel.
Ms. Marvel will be a Disney+ exclusive TV series following the adventures of Kamala Khan, otherwise known as Ms. Marvel. Khan stands as the first hero in Marvel history to be of Muslim faith, with Pakistani parents.
Her parents moved to America from Karachi, Pakistan, giving readers of the comic’s insight into the life of an American-Pakistani and a glimpse into the workings of a Pakistani household as portrayed by Marvel.
Khan gains the ability to shapeshift, elongating, shrinking, or supersizing her body as she sees fit. Think of it similar to the abilities of Ant-Man in the MCU. She serves to protect Jersey City from the baddies, all while dealing with life as an awkward teenager with strict and protective parents.
Ms. Marvel is promised to be set in the MCU and therefore we’re seriously hoping to see some cameos from Captain Marvel herself, Khan’s mentor and inspiration. Yet another comparison, think of it similar to the dynamic between Tony Stark and Peter Parker in the MCU. Khan is even an awkward, nerdy teen just like Peter Parker is.
The show is slated to release at the same time as Disney+ (November 12), though no details on plot or casting have surfaced at the time of writing.
