As more and more streaming services pressure us into subscription, just how expensive will the social conformity to keep up with all the exclusives be?

In the battle to dominate the streaming game, more and more services are weighing in, many of which muster up exclusive shows and films as to make themselves stand out. With exclusives comes a building social pressure to keep up with everything. You don’t want to feel left out on Disney+’s shows, nor Netflix’s Breaking Bad movie, nor Chernobyl which is on HBO and Now TV. So exactly how expensive is it took avoid this social embarrassment?
AED 395 a month.
AED 395 a month is what it will cost you to be truly up to date on all the entertainment being churned out. To be clear, that figure is taking into account the estimated monthly subscription costs of the following services:
- Disney+ (with the ESPN+ and Hulu bundle): AED 48 (approx.)
- Netflix: 48 AED (approx.)
- BritBox: 27 AED (approx.)
- StarzPlay 30 AED (approx.)
- HBO Now: 55 AED (approx.)
- Apple TV+: 37 AED (approx.)
- Amazon Prime: 33 AED (approx.)
- OSN Wavo: 37 AED (approx.)
- Now TV: 36 AED (approx.)
Coughing up the cash for these nine services a month, will give users all the exclusives across each service, as well as sports, movies, cable TV channels, Arabic TV, and British TV.
Over a year, that’ll be 4740 AED. While that figure sounds near impossible at first, taking into account a usual TV-service subscription makes it sound less daunting. Du’s most complete package, the ‘Platinum package’ costs around AED 417 a month, giving users access to TV, films, sports, and kids’ TV.
This figure isn’t even taking into account more eye-watering services like YouTube TV or PlayStation Vue, both of which can cost well over AED 160 a month. It does however take into account all the shows you’d need to get you through any dinner party conversation.
