From July 18-21, more than 135,000 people found themselves in the San Diego Convention Center for the 50th annual Comic-Con event. Naturally, as you would expect for a half century celebration, this Con was a big one, with some of the best reveals in recent years. Why exactly was Comic-Con so nerd-tastic this year?
Esquire Middle East recently wrote about the 50h anniversary of the geek-fest, talking about its humble origins in hotel basements and its attendance size being one 1,000th of 2019’s Con.
As the name would have you believe, Comic-Con stood as an opportunity for all comic book lovers (also known as nerds) to convene and celebrate their passion for the industry and artform as a whole. Today, the Con is about much more than just comic books, in fact in recent years comicbooks have taken a bit of a back seat to make room for other platforms.

These days the Con is about pop culture as a whole, it’s a place to show off ‘EVERYTHING’ meaningful in the pop culture world that’s coming up. It’s not just your sci-fi or you superheros sending out the press releases anymore. A whole variety of names in the popular culture scene make noise at Comic Con now.
Variety is the key word this year.
This is the reason that the 50th Comic Con has really turned heads and made headlines, there’s a lot of variety in what was announced. Sure, you got your DC and your Marvel (loads of Marvel actually), but you also got things like IT Chapter Two, Top Gun, an animated Harley Quinn series, Rick and Morty, the weird Cats musical thing.

We admit, a lot of pop culture stuff has overlap in its fandom, chances are if you like Star Trek, you also like Star Wars. The point we’re making however is not only the sheer quantity of annoucements, but how each has a slightly different core fanbase. Top Gun fans might not be the same as Rick and Morty fans for example, but they both got some great news at the Con this year.
Speaking quantitively for a moment, this was obviously a big win for the Con this year too. Marvel had 11 announcements for goodness sake, and that’s with them supposedly holding back. We might have actually exploded if we got news on the fifth MCU phase perhaps.
Comic Con once stood as a haven for all of geek-kind, now in 2019, where being a geek is cool, Comic Con stands as the place to push the entirety of pop culture forward.
It’s not just your basement-dwellers watching or reading Marvel anymore, Endgame is now the most profitable film of all time right. Part of the reason this Con was so good is because everything it was showing off is now in the public eye, it’s big news, it’s not so obscure anymore, everyone loves Terminator, Rick Grimes and The Flash in 2019.

As all these once-nerdy things gain more mainstream popularity, the budgets get bigger, they start looking better, they’re taken as seriously as productions which ‘AREN’T’ stewing in geek juice. Back to Endgame’s success once more, it’s quite symbolic that is made more cash than Titanic. More and more people these days see geek stuff as a mainstream genre of entertainment. Chances are your parents might be just as pumped for the Rick Grimes movie as you are.
Comic Con this year celebrated its 50th in style, with some of the biggest drops for the pop culture world we’ve ever seen. Its variety in releases and the overall variety in the ever growing atendee list of Comic Con is why we think it was so good this year.
