Star will play Mattel’s titular blond Barbie doll

The live-action Barbie movie just confirmed its first casting; Margot Robbie will play Mattel’s most popular doll in a new film destined for cinemas next year.

The film has been in something of a production snafu, with stars such as Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway rumoured to be portraying Barbie in the film. The project was then moved from Sony to Warner Bros.

Now, it’s confirmed that Robbie will bring the doll to live on the silver screen, alongside two screenwriters and one potential director.

Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach will pen the script, and Gerwig will direct. This will be Gerwig’s fourth feature film, after last year’s critically-acclaimed Lady Bird (which won her Oscar nominations for Best Director, as well as Best Original Screenplay).

Gerwig is currently finishing off her third feature film, Little Women, starring Emma Watson, Meryl Streep and Timothee Chalamet.

Baumbach has also been Oscar-nominated, for Best Original Screenplay (The Squid and the Whale).
