- Game of Thrones is finished, and so too are many people’s want for an HBO subscription
- A week after the finale aired Google searches for “cancel HBO subscription” shot up
- It’s predicated that more than 20 per cent of the network’s subscribers will cancel over the next month
- This comes despite other HBO productions such as Westworld and True Detective
Game of Thrones final season received a mixed reaction from fans. What isn’t mixed is the millions of people looking to cancel their HBO subscription.
In a tweet from David Coletto, CEO of a leading polling and market research film, he jokingly revealed a graph showing the Google searches for “cancel HBO subscription.

The graph, spanning a week from the 13th of May to the 20th, shows a massive increase in the search the moment the Game of Thrones series finale aired on the 19th. It seems people only used the service for that one show, ignoring other shows such liek Westworld or True Detective which have both been hugely popular in the past.
In fact, ‘Westworld’ just dropped a trailer for its third season.
Global market intelligence agency Mintel found in a study that an impressive 20 per cent of HBO subs would vanish if “a specific program ended” – obviously that means ‘Game of Thrones.
If this isn’t proof enough that an HBO subscription a Game of Thrones subscription, another graph shows a spike in the search “subscribe to HBO” just as the eighth season began, how little we knew back then…
