Game of Thrones
For all the talk about winter coming, the season we are most excited about this year is Spring. The reason? Season 6 of Game of Thrones. With the TV series now having surpassed the (glacial pace of) George RR Martin source material, the ever-twisting storyline now has extra impetus for viewers as now no one knows what will happen next, even that mate of yours who keeps reminding you that he’s read all the books. This season we return to Westeros, to find out whether if Jon Snow – last seen bleeding by The Wall – really is dead; and just what will Cersei’s wrath be on the religious sect that forced her to walk naked through the streets. Oh, also, more dragons.
Marseille
In the late 90s, no English language film based in France existed without the charmingly swollen face of Gerard Depardieu. It’s glad to see that some things haven’t changed, as the larger than life actor take top billing in Netfilx’s latest tense, political-thriller Marseille. Based in the southern port town, Depardieu plays city’s long-serving mayor, who will do (just about) anything to hinder the success of his successor. All eight episodes will be available on Netflix exclusively from May 5. Pace yourself.
Silicon Valley
In arguably the funniest (and cleverest) comedy to come out in recent years, HBO’s Silicon Valley is rightfully back for a third season. When we left them, the gang of computer programmers were on the verge of losing their beloved company Pied Piper (again!) through via the sneaky dealings of their investors. Expect the usual brand of satire and hijinks to continue, especially with the growing star of comedian TJ Miller.
Maigret
People love a detective series, and one of the few remaining famous detectives yet to credibly (sorry Michael Gambon) be made into a TV series is Georges Simenon’s famed Parisian top-cop, Jules Maigret. Now while some may look at this as a watered-down replacement for that Poirot-shaped hole in their lives, the fact that the British broadcasted, ITV, has persuaded Rowan Atkinson to play the titular character has added intrigue to the short series. Set in the 1950s, there isn’t a hint of Mr Bean or Blackadder style-comedy from the leading man, with Atkinson a self-confessed Maigret fan, he’s sure to do it justice.
The Girlfriend Experience
Steven Soderbergh may have stopped directing films, but his influence behind the camera runs far and wide. He takes on the executive producer role of this new Starz series, based on the same premise as his 2009 film of the same name. The TV series stars Riley Keough (Elvis’ granddaughter) as a law student with a prestigious law firm internship. Due to her money-issues, she is pulled into the world of high-end prostitution. She provides her clients with the, you guessed it, girlfriend experience. Expect plenty of explicit scenes, but also a refreshing amount of depth and character development.
Veep
Whether you are loving the seemingly-endless US election campaign or not, Veep offers political satire at its very finest. The brilliant Julia Louis-Dreyfus is back, of course now no longer the Veep, as the president in this latest series. Let the sharp wit, tight dialogue and that sad inevitability that truth might not be so different from fiction run free.
Marcella
From the creator of Scandi Noir series The Bridge (not the rather average US remake), Marcella brings the dark and taut storytelling to the British ITV network. Expect a blend of complex plotting and grisly murders, the new series gives London a Film Noir twist with wonderful visuals and a troubling story of a serial killer.
