Shahrbanoo Sadat, the acclaimed filmmaker from Afghanistan, has left the country that has recently been in turmoil, we can now confirm.
Katja Adomeit, Producer & CEO, Adomeit Film released a statement to Esquire Middle East that she is currently in Abu Dhabi.
“We can announce that Afghan film director Shahrbanoo Sadat has made it out of Afghanistan. With the help of the French government and the help from people all around the world, Shahrbanoo made it after many days together with 9 family members through the crowds and Taliban checkpoints into the airport, where French soldiers took care of her and her family. Communication with Shahrbanoo Sadat at the moment is difficult, but she has confirmed she is in Abu Dhabi soon boarding a plane to Europe,” Adomeit said.

Shahrbanoo Sadat is an Afghan, female writer and director, who was based in Kabul. She studied at Atelier Varan in Kabul. Her first feature film Wolf and Sheep was developed with the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence in 2010, Shahr – 20 years old at the time – the youngest ever selected. The film won the main award at Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight 2016.
Her second feature film The Orphanage is also the second part of a pentalogy, five films based on an unpublished diary by Anwar Hashimi. It was shown at the Director’s Fortnight in 2019. She is currently developing the third part of the pentalogy called Kabul Jan.
