First look at Dubai's new rooftop experience: drive-in cinema at Mall of the Emirates
Depressed because you haven't had a chance to live life as usual because of the coronavirus pandemic? Soon, you'll be able to do one pre-Covid-19 activity that might help your mood: go to the cinemas.
Taking a page out of the 1980s, Dubai will soon be launching a drive-through cinema. It will be on the roof of the Mall of the Emirates, and has been developed in response to Covid-19.
Vox Cinemas Drive-in on the rooftop of Mall of the Emirates was launched this week with a special screening of Will Smith's latest release Bad Boys for Life.
The new cinema will open to the public on Sunday May 17, with evening screenings held at 7.30pm. The capacity of the Vox Cinemas Drive-in is 75 cars, with a maximum of two people per vehicle.
Vox Cinemas said all staff will follow Majid Al Futtaim’s health and safety measures to ensure that physical distancing is maintained at all times.
How will it work?
Once parked, audiences can tune into a designated radio frequency for the movie audio to be broadcast straight into their car.
So how much will this cost?
The cost per car (2 people max) is AED180+ VAT, which includes an F&B package for two people consisting of caramel popcorn, salt popcorn, nachos, M&Ms, soft drinks and water.
In line with government regulations, individuals above the age of 60 and children between the ages of three and 12 years of age are not permitted to access the mall and the drive-in cinema experience. Movie lovers can explore the full schedule of drive-in films and book their tickets via Vox Cinema’s website and app, which will be updated every Monday with showtimes.
