Nike’s weird and wonderful portfolio of collaborations prove to the world that the brand can make the most random of things work in shoe form. Spongebob is no exception.
This year Nike has been doing a few more out-there collabs, we’re thinking of the Nintendo 64 shoes for example.
Pop culture has always been in Nike’s crosshairs though, it recently did a Stranger Things collab, though so did the rest of the universe this year so.
Pre-warning here, the following will make you feel old: the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants turned 20 years old this year. It’s a big year for the lovable sponge and his friends, as part of the celebration, Nike has got in on the action.
Kyrie Irving, the basketball player, has teamed up with Spongebob and Nike to drop five themed shoes.
All the main characters are here, but in trendy sports shoe form. There’s Spongebob, Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Krabs and Sandy Cheeks. If we’re being picky, we’d point out there’s no Plankton, however a squished version of him is on the Krabs shoe – how fitting.
Each shoe is themed after the character it’s named after. The Spongebob shoe is of course yellow, along with patterns that make it look extra spongey and a Nike swoosh that is inspired by kelp.
Despite the childish origins, these shoes have incredible attention to detail, all of which are reflective of the character. The Mr. Krabs shoe for example has dollars and the money-green colour smeared across the low-cut silhouette inside the shoe.
It’s clear the shoes are true to the show, with design choices like Mr.Krabs’ showing that Irving has actually seen the show and understands how much Krabs loves cash.
Each shoe also has the faces of each character on the insole of the respective sneaker, along with a scrawled signature behind the tongues of the shoe.
The collaboration is up for grabs on August 10 for $130 for each pair.
