Dubai Opera restaurant to no longer carry Sean Connolly name
English-born Australian chef Sean Connolly will sadly close his first Dubai restaurant - the aptly named Sean Connolly at Dubai Opera.
The acclaimed chef’s first foray into the Middle East is coming to an end, with Connolly telling us that the restaurant will close its doors on January 15.
“It’s with great sadness that I leave my 'baby' behind,” he revealed to Esquire Middle East. “But I do intend to keep coming back to Dubai.”
Located on the top floor of Dubai’s iconic, dhow-shaped opera, the restaurant has the capacity to host up to 350 guests. It opened its doors in September 2017.
The restaurant space includes a main restaurant, private dining room, chef’s table, bar and outdoor rooftop terrace that overlooks views of the Burj Khalifa.
After just 16 months in business, Sean Connolly's restaurant joins other high-profile closures over the last year, including Greg Malouf's Zahira, Michael Mina's Firebird Diner and Dragonfly by Tim Raue.
However, with 596 restaurants and 427 cafes opening in the period between January and November 2018, there's no dearth of big celebrity chefs like Akira Back, Heston Blumenthal and Massimo Bottura coming over to the Gulf to open new restaurants.
As one of the most chic and impressive venues in Dubai, we at Esquire are sad to see Sean Connolly at Dubai Opera go.
